Writer’s Block

28465536_sI haven’t written for a couple of weeks, not because of I’ve busy, but because I genuinely have had writer’s block.

I keep trying to think of topics to write on, and then dismiss them; do you really want to know about every single scab of Dylan’s chickenpox? Do you really want to hear the social media storm of ‘Cat in a Van’ (if you are friends with me on Facebook, you’ll have been bored to tears by the tale!)? Do you want to know what fun I had at the weekend? No, I didn’t think so.

This blog is meant to be based on my #40b440 achievements and in the last couple of weeks, they have, I must admit, been pretty run of the mill.

I’ve done my 15. Practice yoga every day (albeit, sometimes just before I go to bed when a quick sun salutation and savasana are the only things I can muster the energy to do), I’m still struggling with 31. Once a week make a meal from from of our many cookbooks and still trying 34. Take the stairs at every opportunity!

The only big milestone I’ve completed is 1. Change a bike tyre but I can’t write a whole, interesting blog about getting a puncture, coming home and being taught to change a tyre!

So I need some inspiration. I need to blog-search and, so that’s what i’m going to do. If you have any ideas, links, thoughts, do let me know: info@abbylacey.co.uk or comment here!

The Highs and Lows of #40b440

It’s been a month since my 39th birthday and ‘the list’ is certainly having an effect on my day-to-day life. So far, my emotions have included happiness, frustration, joy, anxiety – you name it, both ends of the spectrum have been covered!

The Highs

6. Take a photo every day of something that makes you smile6

I love this one – I’ve had only a couple of days where it’s been hard, but I do find myself looking at everything thinking, ‘ooh you make me smile, where’s my camera’!

5. Visit Buddhapadipa Temple5

On a rainy Sunday afternoon we drove to Wimbledon to the Buddhapapida Temple. Despite the rain, the temple was simply stunning; the white-washed walls gleamed against the red and gold. Inside the temple, many were meditating – mostly Thai people being a Thai temple – whilst a teacher sat in front of the most glorious alter speaking softly to an Englishman about karma.

Buddhapapida Temple4

Buddhapapida Temple10We braved the rain to explore the grounds and discovered many deities hidden amongst the trees. A beautiful and peaceful place.

88. Adopt the 10 second rule:  “You can stand anything for 10 seconds,” says Kimmy Schmidt. “Then you just start on a new 10 seconds.”

Another one I love – particularly when it comes to exercise. It makes it so much easier knowing you’ve only got to endure 10 seconds!

The Lows

3131. Once a week, make a meal from one of our many cookbooks

Surprisingly this is the one thing on the list causing me the most stress!

I’ve always enjoyed cooking and don’t think I’m that bad at it, plus because of this we have loads of cookbooks, but can I just struggle beyond belief to actually cook from a recipe. I look to them for inspiration, adapting recipes  by taking out ingredients I’m not so keen on, or adding ingredients I love. But to have to cook, step by step, is hard work.

4040. Do less with more focus

This isn’t causing me stress but is difficult because a) I’m scatty and b) I love to procrastinate. I seem to flip from one thing to another every five seconds… but I’m working on it!

Come back to find out about the ones I’m really looking forward to!

40 becomes 39

It was in the news at the weekend that Pont des Arts, AKA the Love Lock bridge, in Paris will be closing this week for removal of its brass locks, due to fears of the bridge collapsing. I was shocked that this would happen to one of my #40b440 items – how could this be? What do I do now?

I looked into other bridges in Paris, hoping that I could still find an excuse for a quick stopover in the City of Love, but quickly realised that this symbol of affection was becoming outdated and downright dangerous – not just in Paris but elsewhere.

So I quit. I decided that this was out of my control and, after looking for another thing to add to my #40b440 list, I should just deal with the fact that this is now 39b440 – the name’s not changing, just the content… and let’s face it, it’s going to save me some money (see 37. start saving)!
